How to Cook Fried Tofu
Delicious tofu in minutes! I can cook this recipe in the comfort of my own home or in the comfort of the great outdoors in my make-shift kitchen! Try it out. Should you want to add a little extra, I chop up some scallions and simmer them in a homemade sauce to pour over the fried tofu!
Time Cooking Fried Tofu
Prep time: ~10-15 minutes
Cooking time: ~ 30 minutes
2 blocks of firm tofu (extra firm is okay, too)
2 tbsp. vegeta seasoning
2 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 scallions, optional
vegetable oil (or canola oil) – enough in pan for it to come up a little less than 1/2 way on tofu
chopsticks (or a fork)
wok (or deep pan)
small sauce pan, optional if you are making a sauce with the tofu
plate (to serve tofu on)
bowl (to place under strainer to catch liquid)
Step 1: Cut the tofu blocks in half hamburger style (horizontally), then cut the two halves into the size of tofu bites you want. I cut them so that I get a total of 16 bites out of one block.
Step 2: Then, put the tofu into a bowl with some warm water and a teaspoon of salt. Rinse the tofu well in the salt water. Use a strainer to strain the water and tofu. Repeat this process one more time.
Seasoning the Tofu
Step 1: Once tofu is properly rinsed, add the pepper, salt, and vegeta seasoning to the tofu. Mix in the seasoning well.
Step 2: Set the bowl of tofu aside, and let it marinate for a short while so you can make other preparations, like waiting for the oil in the pan to heat up.
Cooking the Tofu
Step 1: Put the pan on a burner set to medium-high heat. Pour in the vegetable or canola oil in the pan, enough for tofu to be submerged a little less than 1/2 way. Don’t put the tofu in yet!
Step 2: Make sure the oil is HOT. Wait a couple of minutes for the oil to heat up. As a test, you can splash a droplet of water in the pan. If you hear it sizzle, the tofu is ready to be cooked!
Step 3: If the oil is hot, begin carefully placing your tofu from the strainer to the pan using your chopsticks or fork. You can fill up the pan, just know that you’ll be in charge of making sure all that tofu doesn’t burn. If you’ve never fried tofu before, start with a few pieces (3-5) in the pan so you can get in a good rhythm!
Step 4: Cook tofu on it’s side until it is golden brown. This usually takes about 1-2 minutes until it’s ready to rotate. If your tofu is thick, it might take closer to 2 minutes. When you see that it is golden brown on the side, rotate it on another and repeat the step. This is where your fork/chopsticks come in handy. Careful not to burn your fingers!
Step 5: Tofu should be golden brown on each side. You can stand up your tofu vertically (so it looks like a tower) and can get cooked on its edges. I cook the tofu tower-style last, but you do you!
Step 6: When tofu is golden brown, remove the the tofu from the pan and onto the plate you have strategically placed beside your cooking station. Repeat this process until all your delicious, golden tofu is cooked!
Sauce it up (optional)
If you are adding sauce, go for it!
I would highly suggest making your sauce last since it will be fresh and warm! Making sauce doesn’t take too long to create anyway.
I have a recipe for sauce that goes perfectly with this tofu… but it’s not finished yet! STAY TUNED 🙂
Eating the Tofu
If you have prepared a sauce, drizzle your sauce on top of the tofu you just proudly fried! If you have not, THAT’S OKAY! I rarely do! If you didn’t just get ready to stuff your belly with some great-tasting and flavorful tofu.
I have a recipe for a sauce perfect for this tofu COMING SOON! Stay tuned!
